In 2009, there were 3001 adoptions from China to the United States. Our M was 1 of those 3001!
China opened its doors to inter-country adoption in 1992. China has a good relationship with the United States. Both countries are Hague countries; they both have signed the Hague treaty adhering to the agreed upon inter-country adoption policies. The Hague treaty puts into place stringent requirements for countries, adoption agencies and others, all in the best interest of children.
China has different adoption programs. We are adopting from the special needs program this time. I'll talk more about special needs adoption in China another day.
China is one of the most popular choices for parents pursuing inter-country adoption. Although actual adoptions are decreasing from the peak year of 2005, many people are still showing interest in China adoptions. Most of the children adopted from China (about 91%) are girls.
Adopting from China is a wonderful experience. The people of China were welcoming and gracious, and we were well taken care of while we were there. We are excited about returning to China to bring home the child that God has waiting for us!
